Why Take EfM? This class is designed for all lay people who want to learn more about their faith. It is appropriate for everyone; participants’ backgrounds vary from no Biblical studies to many classes. Class members welcome the opportunity to discuss how their faith intersects with their daily life.
What Does EFM stand for? In the beginning of the program EfM stood for "Education for Ministry" and EFM has evolved into titles that include "Engaging Faith Meaningfully" and "Exploring Faith Matters". The key is that it is a program that engages individuals to explore their faith.
What is EFM?/ EfM Topics: EfM is a four-year program in which one commits just one year at a time. Year 1 covers the Old Testament, Year 2 the New Testament, and Year 3 & 4 church history, ethics and philosophy.
EFM is a Seminar-Style Group: This is a class that is mentored, not taught. EFM’s philosophy is that we are each on a spiritual journey and we interpret information based on our prior experiences. Class structure is based on the idea that people learn best in an accepting environment of free and open discussion.
A typical EFM session: Each class will usually include worship, discussion of weekly text readings, Bible readings, theological discussions (topics often chosen by students), and prayer. There are no quizzes, no tests, no papers, and no final exam.
