The Ministry of Worship (MOW) oversees the various activities (many behind the scenes) that contribute to a smooth and meaningful worship service at CACC-UCC. These include the music program, the audio team, training and selection of ushers for regular and memorial services, preparation for Communion services, Communion stewards, selection of liturgists, decoration of the Sanctuary for special occasions such as Christmas and Easter, and filling the flower calendar – all of which are managed by the Worship Committee. In addition, MOW is responsible for strategic planning, such as initiating alternative forms of worship. Taizé, begun in 2012, is an example.

The Worship Committee (WC) meets monthly with the Senior Minister to manage ongoing programs and initiate new ones. In 2013-2014, the committee launched an Annual Music Appreciation Sunday (with a Mardi Gras theme) to recognize and celebrate the outstanding musicians and choir that bless our Sunday services. Bibles were placed prominently in our pews to support CACC-UCC’s goal that our worship services are based on the scriptures. Volunteers for the 10:15 am Communion Preparation Team were trained, making for a lighter work load for all. Decorations were put up and taken down for the Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas seasons. The Wassail Bowl coffee in December was sponsored and staffed by members of the WC.

Bell choir at Casas Adobes protestant church in TucsonThe Music Committee (MC) oversees the music program for Sunday worship services throughout the year.

The Chancel Choir sings each Sunday from September through May. From June through August, the choir sings once each month and soloists sing on the other Sundays. The Bell Choirs (adult and children) perform music on a regular basis throughout the year. Each Christmas, the Choir presents a Christmas Cantata. This past Christmas the Choir provided a cantata, The Christmas Oratorio, by Saint-Saens, sung in Latin.

The MC also oversees the Singers Scholarship program, offering scholarships to four University of Arizona students who then act as section leaders for the choir. In addition to the music for Sunday services, the Singers as well as several choir members routinely sing for the Taizé Service, weddings and funeral services.

Finally, the MC supervises and coordinates the activities of the music director, the organist, and accompanist, all of whom are employees of CACC-UCC. The committee also sponsors concerts from time to time, featuring the Singers and other local groups, providing programs, ushers and receptions as needed.

Taizé (Alternative Service)
Taizé worship service in TucsonTaizé is an alternative form of worship initiated in 2012 as part of the 2011 Strategic Plan for CACC-UCC.

It originated in France in the 1950s as a simpler form of worship, free from the usual trappings of Sunday worship. The unique service relies on music, readings, silence, and meditation. There is no sermon. While members of CACC-UCC are certainly encouraged to attend, Taizé is part of the church’s outreach to the Tucson community. The program’s success will ultimately be judged by how successfully it achieves community involvement. People who have attended the services report that it has brought them closer to the Spirit of God. They appreciate the quiet time to meditate and reflect on their journey through life.

People from all walks of life are welcome to participate. The program is self-sustaining and relies solely on voluntary offerings by participants. It is not supported financially by CACC-UCC.

Taizé services are held on the second Thursday of each month in the CACC-UCC Sanctuary. The service begins at 6:30 PM and ends at 7:15 PM. Please join us in this unique spiritual experience!

These people work unselfishly behind the scenes to ensure that the Senior Minister and others can be heard during church services. They operate and maintain the sound system in a highly professional manner. We extend our thanks for these outstanding people.
