February 19 Forum: Gillaspie On Town Governance

What is it like to be an elected official of a growing town?

Barry Gillaspie will reflect on his experiences as an Oro Valley Town Councilman when he speaks at the next Casas Adobes Forum at 11:30 Sunday morning, February 15, in McNear Hall. He'll talk about local government, the challenges of governance and even venture a look at the future. The hour-long format will allow time for questions.

Gillaspie is a Tucson native, a University of Arizona graduate in Agriculture with an emphasis in Natural Resource Planning, and has lived in Oro Valley for 27 years. After doing graduate research on water quality problems, he worked for 15 years (1983-1998) at Pima County Planning and Development Services, finishing as Principal Planner. Presently he serves as Director of Information Technology for Development Services at Pima Community College. He was elected to the Oro Valley Town Council in 2004.

This is the sixth program in the new and popular Forum series, which features speakers who present factual information about current issues so people attending can make up their own minds as to where they stand. John Wall serves as moderator. The presentations, sponsored by the Growth & Development Committee, are free and open to the public.

"Healing the Heart of Democracy"

"Healing the Heart of Democracy," educator Parker Palmer's latest book, will be the topic of a new Wednesday afternoon study beginning January 11th, led by Senior Minister Lee Milligan. The book examines our life together as citizens and promotes a return to civility and compassion among those of every political stripe and opinion. There will be nine sessions on Wednesday afternoons, 1:00 to 2:30 pm beginning January 11th and ending March 14th. The group will not meet Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. Call the church office to register. You will need to purchase a copy of the book for yourself and ideally, read the introduction and first chapter before the class begins.

Called to Care

A New Year begins with it both joys and cares. You, or someone you know may have need of prayers, pastoral care or contact by a layperson. Let us know if you would like a visit or a listening ear! Please contact the office (297-1181) for our Ministers or our Parish Nurse. You can also contact Chris Sternberg or Kathy Huston with prayer and care requests.

This program is for those interested in becoming a care provider with our Called to Care Program. In addition, current Stephen Ministers and those who would like to learn more about relating and caring for others, are warmly invited to join us. There will be a total of 14 remaining hours.

The assembled group at the first session chose that they will meet every Monday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in rooms 9 &10 in McNear Hall. There is no charge for these sessions.

Special Lent Activities 2012

An Ash Wednesday service will be held in the chapel at 12 noon on February 22. The theme is "Our Lenten Adventure." There will be the imposition of ashes for those who wish it.

Minister Lee Milligan will lead a six-week Lenten Adult Education series, "A New Look at the Old Book," from 10 to 11:30 am Wednesday mornings, beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 22. The series will be based on Marcus Borg's newest book, "Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning," and Walter Wangerin's setting of the Biblical narrative into a novel in his "Book of God."

Participants will need to buy copies of both books, which are available on the internet or can be ordered from local bookstores. A soup and bread meal will be offered between the end of the morning "New Look at the Old Book" sessions and the start of the continuing "Healing the Heart of Democracy" Book Study, also led by Pastor Lee, that begins at 1 pm.

For those who cannot attend Wednesday morning sessions, a repeat of the "New Look at the Old Book" sessions will be offered Thursday evenings beginning February 23. A soup and bread meal at 6 pm will be followed by the class from 6:30 – 8 pm. We need a minimum of 15 people to commit to the Thursday evening series. There will be a sign-up sheet in the office. Please call 297-1181 to reserve your place.
