Rev. Dr. James B Nelson (pictured) laced scholarship with humor when he presented an overview of Christian Ethics at the Southwest Conference's Lay Academy held June 3-4 at Casas Adobes Congregational Church. Participants looked at the moral life through the lens of their Christian faith. Nelson, who now lives in Tucson , is professor Emeritus of Christian Ethics at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (Minnesota) and is noted for his many books and other writings in the areas of Christian ethical theory, sexuality ad homosexuality from a Christian perspective, ethical perspectives on new medical issues, and addictions.
SWC presents the Lay Academy four times a year. Each session offers lay members of UCC churches in the conference the opportunity to hear and interact with noted theologians. Among those attending this workshop were five representatives from churches in Prescott and Flagstaff (pictured). They all received an "extravagant welcome" from CACC Council members and other volunteers who prepared and served Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch and kept the refreshment table stocked for breaks.
Registration for the 2011-12 Academy courses begins in August. Look here later this summer for more information.
